Volunteer FAQ
No. While teachers make up the majority of our volunteer spots, we have several other ways you can serve.
No! We use the same wonderful curriculum Tarrant County College uses (a great deal for our students!) You will have a teacher textbook that has easy-to-follow lesson plans and some optional video and audio supplements. We also have a supply closet with LOTS of hands-on activities. Each student can follow along in his or her own workbook & textbook. We also have teacher training at the beginning of the year and are available to help any time!
No – we want all our students to learn English so English is the language we speak at ESL.
Teachers try to arrive at 6:15 already familiar with what they plan to teach. Childcare & Kids’ Club open at 6:15, so students usually arrive after that. Class begins at 6:30. The Kids’ Club children (kindergarten through 6th grade) go through the buffet line to get pizza, water & fruit. Later, the adult classes break and meet in room 130 for a pizza, veggie & fruit dinner. During dinner, we talk about a timely cultural aspect of life in the U.S. Volunteers eat and chat with the students. We practice saying a Bible verse in English, then return to class until 8:15.
Other volunteers greet, help make sure people and kids know where they’re going, administer the placement test for new students and set up and clean up dinner. Beyond the schedule logistics, there are continuous opportunities to make friends from other cultures, laugh and be a blessing. With better comprehension of the English language, come more opportunities for moms and dads to provide for their kids. ESL classes can truly change someone’s life.
